
Toning Your Upper Body Muscles with Swimming
Your upper body is composed of different muscles, which is why every time you go for a swim these are put into good use. Among the different swimming techniques freestyle swimming, also known as crawl, is the most widely used swimming technique because it is the most efficient, the fastest, and makes use of the upper body muscles more, namely the shoulder muscles, triceps, biceps, chest muscles, deltoids, trapezius, quadriceps, gluteus muscles, respiratory muscles, latissimus dorsi, and hip flexors.
The freestyle technique means that you should cross the water with your chest and head positioned downward towards the pool floor. To propel across the water, one must constantly and quickly move his/her legs upward and downward.
Each stroke starts as your right arm is brought to the front and slightly to the side of your head into the water. As the right hand enters the water, the elbow must be a little bit above the water. At this point the body should be a little bit tilted to the left side. At the same time the left arm goes faster underwater in a pulling motion downwards the length of the body. As soon as the right arm enters the water, the body will roll to the right side effortlessly so that the body becomes horizontal to the surface of the water. As you continue to extend the right arm forward, your body tilting to the right side becomes more prominent while your left arm exits the water near your hip. Your left arm finishes the technique then you start all-over again using the right arm. You have just started the first of a series of freestyle strokes.
Synchronize your head turn and body roll as you execute each stroke. For instance, when your body tilts to the left, your head should also roll to the left side and take a breath of air. After inhaling fresh air, the face should be positioned in the water just like you are looking at the bottom of the pool. Slowly exhale through your nose or mouth as your body tilts to the other side.
Approximately 50 laps of the crawl technique will definitely result in a well-toned upper body.
Being fit and healthy also means that you should take care of your body after each swimming technique. Start with making sure that you are well-hydrated then follow up with a good shower to rinse off the pool chemicals that has come into contact with your body. Nothing beats that refreshed feeling after you have properly showered after a swimming session.
Swimming pools, whether public or private, are treated with more than one swimming pool chemicals so that it can be kept clean. The various swimming pool chemical products include algaecides for controlling algal growth, chlorine for decontamination, clarifiers to make the pool all sparkly looking, and stain preventers to remove the metal deposits in the water. Combining two or more of the pool chemicals will only give you a clean and decontaminated water to swim in.
